How to reduce the cost for using a laser at the main Argon wavelength

Below is a quick estimation of the cost of using Argon gas lasers vs ALS lasers at the same wavelength and for same output power.Warning the values must be considered as arbitrary units. The goal of this exercise is to provide the reader order of magnitude.

We study here below two cases 1.5W@488nm and 6Wà532nm :

Case study #1

Laser 1.5W@488nm>; – running 24/24 hours 5/7 days

Argon Laser (closed loop chiller)

Electrical cost per year: ~ 9 000 (10kW  0,15/kWh)

Lifetime: 5 000 to 15 000 hours with loss of power over time

Argon tube replacement: ~ 8 000

Chiller cost and maintenance: ~ 3000

Alignment cost per year: 3 000 (30mn/day of a technician)

Total over 5 years: 9000*5 + (1 or 2) * 8 000 + 3000 + 3000*5 = ~ 75 000
